Frequently Asked Questions
Effective Winter 2007
  1. What is the Tuition Refund Program?
It is a program, which provides reimbursement of tuition and registration fees of up to $700 maximum per calendar year to eligible members who meet all the requirements of the program.

  2. How much can I be reimbursed?
You may be reimbursed up to a maximum of $700 per calendar year. Beginning with the Winter 2007 term, you can choose to receive a single payment of $700 per calendar year.

  3. When should I file for a refund?
At the end of the term, please send us a completed application form along with a grade report, bursar's receipt, and if applicable, a financial aid statement. We must have this no later than 120 days after the last day of class.

  4. Because of a computer foul-up, I have not yet received my grades and the deadline date is almost here. What should I do?
Send in all the documents that you have, with a note explaining the reason for the delay. Be sure to send us the missing documents as soon as you receive them.

  5. How soon after submitting my application will I receive my check?
After all documents have been received, please allow 4 to 6 weeks processing time for your application.

  6. Can I be reimbursed if I go to a technical, business or secretarial school, or attend a class given by a professional association or take a course via the Internet?
Yes. You can take non-credit or job-related courses, in a college or university, licensed or registered business, technical, secretarial, trade school, given by a professional association or on-line.

  7. I just registered for a short-term course of less than one week. Can I be reimbursed for my tuition fees?
Yes. Eligible members who take non-credit or job-related courses can be reimbursed.

  8. Do I have to pass the course to be reimbursed?
Yes. If you fail, withdraw, or receive an incomplete, you will not be reimbursed for that course. If you take a course for credit, you must receive a grade of C or better and, for non-credit courses, a successful letter of completion or certificate is required in order to be eligible for reimbursement.

  9. Are there any other sources of financial aid?
Yes. The main sources are state (TAP), federal (PELL), and aid for part-time (APTS). If you take six credits or more, you can contact the financial aid officer in your school.

  10. Must I apply for these other sources of aid if I want to be reimbursed?
Yes. We require proof of application for other financial aid before we can reimburse. The amount that you will be reimbursed is the difference between the tuition and registration fees that you paid and the amount of aid that you received, up to a maximum of $700 per calendar year.

  11. My child is attending college. Can I be reimbursed for his/her tuition fees?
No. The benefit applies only to the covered member. Your spouse and dependent children or any other dependents are not eligible for education benefits.

  12. I am taking graduate courses. Can I be reimbursed for them?
Yes. The Fund provides reimbursement for undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate courses.

  13. Can I be reimbursed if I take life experience credits?
The Education Fund benefit does not cover these types of credits.

  14. Can I be reimbursed for books, lab, application or professional examination fees?
No. Reimbursement is provided only for tuition and/or consolidated or registration fees.

  15. I filled out an application form last semester. Should I fill out another one for this semester?
Yes, only if you have not been reimbursed a maximum of $700 for the current calendar year.

  16. I am taking an educational leave of absence. Can I be reimbursed while I'm on leave of absence?
No. You must be working as a full-time per annum employee in a title covered by Fund training agreements. (Some part-timers are also eligible). Call the Fund if you're not sure if you are in a covered title.

  17. I'm taking High School Equivalency courses. Can I be reimbursed?
No. The Fund provides High School Equivalency and other basic skills courses FREE to eligible members. Call (212) 815-1700 for an application.

  18. Can I ask my school to file my application?
No. The student, not the school, is responsible for filing the application.

  19. Can I be reimbursed for conference or test preparation courses (i.e., GMAT, LSAT, etc.)?
Conferences or test prep courses are only reimbursable if work-related.

You should call DC 37 Education Fund's Tuition Reimbursement office at (212) 815-1663 or 1664, if your questions have not been answered.
