Melvin McCall, a dedicated husband, father and member of City Laborers Local 924 died Nov. 3. He was 63.

McCall retired from York College in 2009, after working 26 years at Queens College in the City University of New York system.

“Melvin was always reliable; he was someone you could count on and was very knowledgeable about the job and the union,” said Local 924 President Kyle Simmons.

“I worked with him for about 17 years,” said Timothy Lane, a shop steward at York College. “Melvin taught me about the job, how to safely operate power tools. As a mentor to our crew of 11 Laborers, he had a lot of insight on labor laws and the union and instilled in us a good work ethic.”

Melvin McCall is survived by his wife, two daughters, ages 30 and 15, and a young grandson.
