If your apartment leaves you feeling out in the cold, the DC 37 Housing Committee advises you to call (212) 960-4800. That’s the 24-hour Central Complaint Bureau of the city Dept. of Housing Preservation and Development.

From Oct. 1 through May 31, the law says when the temperature outside is below 55, the inside temperature must be 68 degrees. If nighttime temperatures fall below 40 degrees, inside temperatures must be at least 55 from 10 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Hot water should be available 24 hours at a minimum temperature of 120 degrees.

Tenants should not wait for an inspector to verify the complaint. Landlords must correct heat and hot water violations within 24 hours of being reported to HPD.
