Graduation Day for new Patient Care Associates at Coney Island

PROUD GRADUATES from Patient Care Associate training at Coney Island Hospital pose Jan. 30 with union leaders and staff. Course improves skills, raises pay and leads to better care for hospital patients.

Management at Brooklyn’s Coney Island Hospital was less than enthusiastic about establishing a Patient Care Associate training course for their staff.

But the hospital’s reluctance did not discourage Municipal Hospitals Employees Local 420, the DC 37 Hospital Division and the DC 37 Education Fund, because the course would help members upgrade their skills, increase their salaries and provide better care for their patients.

Their persistent efforts to convince management to initiate the course paid off. The hospital established the training program late last year.

The 10 union members who completed the rigorous eight-week course — the first of its kind at Coney Island — graduated Jan. 30 as Patient Care Associates.

“We are the privileged pioneers of this program,” said Local 420 member Gloria Harris, the speaker for the graduating class. “We intend to serve the patients in a respectful and professional manner and help pave the way for other PCAs,” she said.

“I’m very proud of you, because you wanted to do more to serve the patients,” said Grievance Rep Alfred Grant. Speaking on behalf of Local 420 President Carmen Charles, Vice President Togba Porte urged the graduates to continue with their education and to become active in their union.

“We want to see you at union meetings,” he said. “This day marks a great achievement for you,” said Johnnie Locus, assistant director of the District Council 37 Hospital Division. “It’s only the beginning for greater opportunities,” she said. “Congratulations on a job well done.”
