DC 37 marks multicultural heritage

Growing Asian political power

The union’s annual Asian Heritage Committee event was a gorgeous fest celebrating the dynamic diversity of Asian American culture and history.

Held at union headquarters on a pleasant spring evening on May 10, the theme for the event was Asians in America: United for 2020 and Beyond.

Asian Heritage Committee Chair Maf Misbah Uddin, president of Local 1407 and the union treasurer, Change to “spoke of the progressive impact the Asian community on the nation’s landscape and the positive role it will play in the country’s future. “We have become a significant force in politics by coming out to vote in great numbers to elect our leaders and our tremendous work ethic and creativity is leaving a positive mark on our nation’s culture,” he said.

Local 372 and DC 37 President Shaun D. Francois I also spoke of the strong contributions of the Asian community as it forges ahead as a powerful force in city politics.

Other speakers, including state Sen. Robert Jackson, spoke passionately about the need for unity as the country moves closer to the 2020 elections.

The audience was entertained with music and dance presentations that reflected the myriad of cultures of the Asian continent.
