Join the PEOPLE team

“We want members to get the word out: PEOPLE gets political results,” said Chair Sandy Tucker (standing), at a recent coordinators’ meeting.

If teamwork gets the job done, PEOPLE Chair Esther ‘Sandy’ Tucker hopes all DC 37 local presidents will join the team. It would thrill her — and DC 37’s parent union AFSCME — to know the presidents are enrolled as an example for union members to follow.

“The very fabric of PEOPLE’s existence is based on the number of members who join,” said Ms. Tucker, who is the president of City University of New York and Educational Opportunity Centers Local 384. “The funds help working families have a stronger voice in politics and policies.”

PEOPLE — Public Employees Organized to Promote Legislative Equality — is the political action committee of DC 37’s national union, AFSCME. PEOPLE lobbies Congress on behalf of public employees on important issues such as Social Security, pay equity and privatization.

PEOPLE contributions help support politicians who respect and understand the concerns of union members, regardless of party affiliation.

AFSCME President Gerald McEntee was guest speaker at PEOPLE’s April general membership meeting. He challenged DC 37 to regain its number one status in raising PEOPLE dollars. While union dues cannot be used to support political candidates, members’ can voluntarily contribute to the PEOPLE program.

You can make a difference and join PEOPLE with a minimum contribution of 50 cents per pay period. Or you can increase your PEOPLE contribution. Contribute $2.00 or more per pay period and you will be enrolled in the VIP Club. For a membership application call your local’s PEOPLE coordinator or DC 37 PEOPLE Coordinator Pascale Bernard at (212) 815-1550. PEOPLE contributions are not tax deductible.
