Local 420 wins $8K grievance

Local 420 members celebrate $8,000 grievance victory
with Rep Martha Washington (3rd from left) and
Kings County Chapter Chair Leslie Robinson (rear).

Twenty-two members of Municipal Hospital Workers Local 420 who recently won a grievance against the New York City Health and Hospitals Corp. will share an award of $8,000.

The members, who work at Kings County and Woodhull hospitals as Nurses Aides, Dietary Aides, Patient Care Technicians and several other titles, were denied their uniform and maintenance allowance for 2002. When they complained to their managers, they were told that they must work the complete year before receiving their uniform allowances.

The members then sought the help of Johnnie Locus, the Hospitals Division Assistant Director, as well as Ms. Martha Washington and Ms. Desiree Kenlaw, their union representatives at Kings County Hospital and Woodhull.

The Council Reps filed the employees’ grievance in January, charging HHC management with failure to comply with Article III, Section 12, and Article VI of the union’s Institutional Services Agreement.

Prior to the Step II review, management agreed to negotiate. In March, HHC accepted a settlement awarding the 22 members a total of approximately $8,000.

“We knew we had a good case against management,” said Ms. Washington.
