Retiree leader hits back at New York Times

When the New York Times claimed (May 9) that “Unions Seem Immune as City Hall Cuts Costs,” DC 37 Retirees Association President Stuart Leibowitz got angry. He picked up a pen and pointed out the facts. The newspaper printed his letter on May 16.

Explaining that demands on behalf of retirees are prohibited in collective bargaining, he pointed out that in negotiations with the Municipal Labor Committee, the city was nevertheless pressing demands that would cut retiree benefits.

He said DC 37 and the Municipal Labor Committee have supported retiree issues and that the unions understand that benefit cuts for retirees would affect working members when they retire. His letter appears on top.
