Bake sale raises PEOPLE money

Pol. Action Dir. Wanda Williams and Ed Fund Adm. Barbara Kairson (2nd row l.) and the Ed Fund staff are all together in their successful fundraising that netted $400 in proceeds for PEOPLE, the political action fund.

Gourmet dessert testers at DC 37 headquarters faced a dilemma July 12: which delicious, home-baked confection to purchase? The contents of a bake sale spread across a beautifully decorated table on the second floor offered numerous tempting delights. The mischief-making diet busters who prepared these sinful yet scintillating slices of perfection were employees of the DC 37 Education Fund.

They had a good cause up their sleeves: The money they raised was donated to PEOPLE — Public Employees Organized to Promote Legislative Equality — the political action committee ofDC 37’s national union, AFSCME.

Indulging a sweet tooth turned out to be a positive, necessary by-product of supporting political action. Piling on calories for the cause made the chocolate cake consumed by one hungry roving reporter go down easier.

The proceeds from the successful bake sale, amounting to $400, were presented in the form of a giant check to DC 37 Political Action Director Wanda Williams and PEOPLE Chair Kevin Smith, president of MTA Local 1655, by Ed Fund Administrator Barbara Kairson and her merry band of bakers.

“This was a wonderful and welcome surprise,” said Smith.
