Fighback Rally: City Workers Say, 'Stop Cutbacks, Layoffs and Contracting Out!'

On June 14 at City Hall, District Council 37 and other city union and community members stood together to fight back against devastating budget cuts and layoffs. They rallied in support of the vital services they provide throughout the city every day at our schools, hospitals, senior centers, firehouses, libraries, museums, parks, pools, and more.

City workers sent a strong message to Mayor Bloomberg, City Hall and Albany: Cuts and layoffs are not the answer - and they aren't necessary. There are many common sense alternatives on the table to save millions of dollars. At the top of the list are DC 37's anti-privatization proposal to cut the cost of contracting out and to collect the hundreds of millions of dollars in business taxes owed to the city. Together, these measures would improve the city’s balance sheet by more than $800 million.

DC 37 has also released a report titled
New York City’s Uncollected Million$: Recommendations for Increasing Revenue Collection in New York City, which has been distributed to city elected officials.
