DC 37 goes to City Hall demanding the City Council “Pass The Residency Bill"

District Council 37 leaders and rank-file members gathered at City Hall during the November 28th “Day Of Action” to call on members of the City Council to pass the residency bill which would allow DC 37 members to live in the five surrounding counties—Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Orange and Putnam. Other city workers have this choice while 45,000 DC 37 members are required to live within the five boroughs or lose their jobs.

On July 12, 2006, DC 37 and the City reached a contract agreement under which both parties agreed to support a change in the Administrative Code that eliminates the residency requirement and allows them to live in the five surrounding counties. Many are lower paid clerical and blue collar workers, particularly women and minorities The City Council has yet to vote on the bill.

DC 37 is the city's largest public employee union with 121,000 members and 50,000 retirees.
