Statement by Lillian Roberts, DC 37 Executive Director
On Mayor Bloomberg's Re-election Win

"I am proud that District Council 37 was the first major union to endorse the Mayor. On behalf of our 121,000 members, I congratulate him on his victory. We supported the person, not the party label. Mayor Bloomberg has been willing to listen to and act on our proposals. I look forward to a continued positive productive working relationship with him over the next four years.

"When I reached out to the Mayor, he responded to issues crucial to our members and to all New Yorkers such as affordable housing, day care, public health care funding, stopping waste in city government, and assigning civilian workers to civilian jobs at the Police Department and other uniformed agencies.

"I now look forward to even greater progress on these and other issues, including our upcoming contract negotiations.

"This union has a proud tradition of strongly supporting the candidates we endorse. DC 37's powerful political action organization was out in force to ensure success, not just for the Mayor, but for our other candidates, all of whom also won their races."

District Council 37 mobilized the biggest Get Out The Vote campaign in labor for Bloomberg:

  • 300,000 phone calls from our phone banks
  • 300,000 pieces of mail sent out
  • 15 appearances by Lillian Roberts at Bloomberg campaign events

District Council 37 represents 121,000 city employees and 50,000 retirees.
