District Council 37 endorses Local 375 member
Morshed Alam for State Assembly

"He is one of our own and part of our labor family."

Today at a City Hall press conference, District Council 37, the city's largest public employee union with 121,000 members and 50,000 retirees, announced its endorsement of Morshed Alam, a member of Local 375 Civil Service Technical Guild, for the 25th District of the State Assembly in Queens in the September 12 Democratic Primary. DC 37 delegates voted unanimously to endorse Mr. Alam after unanimous recommendations by both the DC 37 Screening Committee and the union's Executive Board. Mr. Alam is the only labor activist running in the District 25 race to replace another labor activist, Brian McLaughlin.

"Mr. Alam is one of our own and part of our labor family. He understands the needs of working families and will focus on the importance of labor issues," said DC 37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts. "I also believe Mr. Alam will best represent the interests of the constituents of the 25th Assembly District because he has been active in the community for more than 15 years. With our endorsement comes a pledge to work diligently on his behalf with our powerful, sophisticated field operations to get out the vote. We have a proven record of strongly supporting those we endorse."

Mr. Alam became the first South Asian to win a public office in New York City when he was elected to Community School Board #29 in Queens. He has fought to improve education and has worked with the NYPD Asian Advisory Council and other community groups on neighborhood concerns such as fighting crime and improving the quality of life. In 1996 he founded the New American Democratic Club to help integrate new American citizens. He is the President of the American Bangladesh Friendship Association and accompanied former President Bill Clinton on his historic visit to Bangladesh.

Joining Ms. Roberts today in support of Mr. Alam's candidacy were City Council Member Hiram Monserrate, who chairs the Veterans Committee; Claude Fort, President of Local 375; Maf Misbah Uddin, Treasurer of DC 37 and President of Local 1407; Lenny Allen, President of Local 2021; and other DC 37 officials and members.
