District Council 37 delegates back new contract

"We've delivered a strong contract with raises of 10%, funds for our welfare fund, and the lifting of residency requirements. This is a GREAT DEAL!"
Says DC 37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts

At the July 25th special delegates meeting, the delegates of District Council 37, the city's largest public employee union, voted overwhelmingly to recommend ratification by union members of DC 37's tentative wage pact with the city.

On July 12, the DC 37 Bargaining Committee voted to accept the agreement. The July 25th vote means that DC 37 members will now vote on the agreement by mail ballot. In accordance with the DC 37 Constitution, the American Arbitration Association, an independent, third-party organization, will conduct the vote. Ballots will be sent to members on Friday, August 4 and must be received by the American Arbitration Association by 9:00 AM on Friday, August 25. Ratification of the contract requires the approval of a majority of the members who vote.

DC 37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts urged DC 37 members to ratify the pact. "I listened hard to what the members wanted and we have delivered. I urge them to vote Yes and to return their ballots as soon as possible. This contract gives members a 5.15% raise upon ratification and another 4% raise six months. There will be an infusion of $40 million into our Welfare Fund, and the residency requirement will be eased - something this union has fought over 20 years to achieve. This is a great deal!"

"The city has promised to move forward on the raises as soon as our members have voted and the contract ratification process is completed."

CONTRACT SUMMARY

The tentative contract agreement with the city on a new wage package covers July 1, 2005 through March 2, 2008.

Members will receive 3.15% on 7/1/05, compounded, 2% on 8/1/06 compounded, and 4% on 2/1/07 compounded. There will be an additional compensation fund of .34% for each bargaining unit. The Welfare Fund will receive approximately $40 million in additional funding. There is an agreement to support legislation to modify the Residency restriction to allow employees to live in Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Orange, Rockland and Putnam counties. The Transit Check program will be extended to cover LIRR, LI MTA buses and MetroNorth transportation carriers. A salary panel will be established to review selected titles and occupational groups to determine salary adjustsments and other compensation modifications. July 1, 2004.
