Director Lillian Roberts Says,"One Year After Term Limits Overturned,
New Yorkers Need a Change."
One year
ago today, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that he would circumvent
the will of the voters and seek to overturn term limits.
District Council
37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts says, "The Mayor's rationale for taking
this step in spite of the fact that voters approved term limits twice was simply
that he believed he was the only person who could guide New York through this
financial crisis. Obviously, he was wrong.
"One year later, New York
has the highest rate of unemployment in 16 years - 10.3 percent. In some communities,
that rate is even higher. Today, Bronx County has been declared by the U.S. Census
Bureau to be the poorest urban county in the nation. Today, affordable housing
is almost non-existent. Thousands of affordable housing units are being warehoused
by the New York City Housing Authority, yet there are a record number of homeless
people in the city. Hunger in the city is on the rise. New Yorkers are being burdened
with an ever-increasing number of fines, fees and taxes and finding it more and
more difficult to make ends meet.
District Council 37 believes that it
is time for a change. Democratic Mayoral Candidate Bill Thompson offers us the
change working New Yorkers need.
District Council 37 has endorsed Bill
Thompson for Mayor because New York's working men and women deserve a Mayor who
cares about creating jobs, creating and protecting affordable housing, supporting
vital city services that protect children, provide New Yorkers with a helping
hand in hard times and maintain the quality of life that makes New York great."
District
Council 37 is New York City's largest public employee union, with 125,000 members
and 50,000 retirees. | |
