Statement from DC 37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts re introduction of James Zagroda 9/11 Health and Compensation Act

The everyday heroes of DC 37 applaud New York Senators Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) for introducing the landmark James Zagroda 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.

Six years ago when we first took this matter to Representatives Carolyn Maloney and Jerrold Nadler they spearheaded this effort.

This legislation is so important to the members of District Council 37, AFSCME, AFL-CIO because thousands of these brave and selfless men and women who assisted in the rescue and recovery effort following the attack on the World Trade Center are currently dealing with illnesses caused by their exposure to toxic fumes and burning chemicals. They rely on treatment from the Centers of Excellence here in New York.

The passage of this legislation will guarantee a continuation of these vital clinics for 30 years and would establish a Victims' Compensation Fund for first responders for the total cost of $12 billion - the least we can do to thank these everyday heroes for their selfless response to their fellow New Yorkers in a time of dire need.

I am also very appreciative of the hard work of DC 37's staff, particularly Safety and Health Director Lee Clarke, in monitoring this issue.

District Council 37 is New York City's largest public employee union, with 125,000 members and 50,000 retirees.
