Statement by District Council 37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts on
Bill Thompson's Democratic Primary victory

"Bill Thompson's victory in today's Democratic Primary brings him one step closer to being New York City's next mayor. It also brings New York's hard-working men and women, including the 125,000 members and 50,000 retirees of District Council 37, one step closer to having a Mayor who puts them first.

"That is why District Council 37 supports Bill Thompson. He shares our vision of a government that creates jobs and protects workers as opposed to one that squanders taxpayers' dollars on private contracts, slashes vital services and sends jobs out of state while our communities are experiencing double-digit unemployment.

"Contrary to what many seem to think, money can't buy this election. To become the next Mayor of New York you have to earn New Yorkers' trust. You have to put Main Street before Wall Street.

"You have to put working people's needs before wealthy and corporate interests.

"Bill Thompson knows this. That is why District Council 37 worked hard to help him win today's primary. That is why District Council 37 will work doubly hard for him to win on Election Day.

"We need a change. We need Bill Thompson as the next Mayor of New York City."

District Council 37 is New York City's largest public employee union, with 125,000 members and 50,000 retirees.
NYC Board of Education Employees Local 372 of DC 37 represents 25,000 NYC school workers.
