Statement from Henry Garrido and Mario Cilento on New York State funding agreement for NYC Health + Hospitals

New York, N.Y. — Today the heads of District Council 37 and the New York State AFL-CIO met with Governor Cuomo to discuss the dire financial condition of New York City Health and Hospitals (H+H) and the potential impact of federal cuts to both the workers and the patients they serve.

As the federal government continues its assault on the working families of this nation, recent federal cuts to health care have roiled New York State’s hospital system causing employees to fear for their jobs and leaving patients concerned about the future of their care.

The State of New York has been working diligently to find ways to handle the cuts without effecting staffing levels and patient care and today the state has managed to assure H+H that they have the necessary funds to operate effectively. We are pleased that as per a letter sent today, monthly payments of $120 million to H+H will be made to provide a total of $360 million in funding by the end of the year.

The Governor has been focused on helping the working men and women of this state and today is yet again a champion of organized labor. We thank him for his urgency in listening and responding to the working women and men of H+H so they may continue to serve the residents of NYC.

Given that we do not expect the federal assault to end anytime soon, we must work together to stop these wrongheaded federal policies, but today we have taken one step closer to ensuring that H+H may continue to serve NYC’s most vulnerable patients.

District Council 37 is New York City's largest public employee union, with 125,000 members and 50,000 retirees.
