Father Mychal Memorial Scholarships go to children of Local 299 members

Local 299 awarded Mychal Judge Memorial Scholarships to three members’ children at its meeting May 27 at union headquarters. The awards honor the Local 299 Chaplain who lost his life in the 2001 terrorist attacks on Manhattan’s World Trade Center.

This year’s winners — Tabiloba M. Momoit, Toluwalope Olaniyan and Emila Pazos — each received a $1,500 award that was presented by Fire Dept. Chaplain and Local 299 member Rabbi Josh Potasniclu. The local puts aside money each year for the scholarship fund, which helps students buy books and pay for school. The local executive board grants the scholarships to applicants based on proof of their acceptance by a college or trade school.

“Any kid attending college these days needs help,” said Jackie Rowe-Adams, the local president. “Father Judge was a hero who died doing his job on 9/11, and we need to support this effort.”

DC 37 members can send donations to the Local 299 Scholarship Fund at 125 Barclay St., New York, NY 10007.

“There is so much more to the union than meets the eye,” Rowe-Adams said. “We have so many benefits and programs for members, but they will only know about them if they come to the membership meetings.”
