Uddin named VP of Asian labor group

More than 60 DC 37 members from nine locals joined the 400 unionists at the 10th convention of the AFL-CIO’s advocacy group for Asian workers, the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, July 9-12 in Las Vegas.

Participants urged the labor movement to step up its organizing, support immigrant rights and promote greater diversity. The delegates supported the federal Dream Act, which would help people who came to the United States illegally as children to become citizens and pursue higher education.

APALA’s elected and appointed officers were sworn in at the convention.

DC 37 Treasurer and Local 1407 President Maf Misbah Uddin was reappointed by AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee to represent AFSCME as a vice president on the board. Local 375 Secretary Ahmed Shakir was named as a vice president by the New York City chapter.

Delegates adopted two resolutions submitted by Uddin, which outlined steps for improving APALA’s budgeting and using media technology to keep members informed on labor issues. Uddin wrote the resolutions with Local 1407 Vice President Jed Matalon.

Veronica Montgomery-Costa, president of DC 37 and of Local 372, headed her local’s delegation.
