Jeff Oshins
President, Local 3005
Jeff Oshins, president of Local 3005, was elected a vice president of the union’s Executive Board in January. This is his first term as a DC 37 vice president.

A City Research Scientist II at the Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene for 15 years, members elected Oshins president of Local 3005 when the new local was formed from Civil Technical Guild Local 375. He served as Local 375’s Chapter 10 recording secretary and vice president. Local 3005 received their charter in June 2018 from AFSCME, the American Federation of County, State and Municipal Employees.

Local 3005 represents about 1,000 members at DOHMH and the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in the titles of architects, city research scientists, OCME criminalists, chemists, radiological scientists, graphic artists, space analysts, project managers and associate project managers, and water ecologists.

Oshins started his civil service career 26 years ago at the Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene as a provisional Public Health Advisor in Local 768. Through civil service exams and education he moved up the ladder. Earning a master’s degree in Public Health from Brooklyn College helped Oshins qualify for City Research Scientist II in the Bureau of HIV Services.

“Making things right, fighting inequalities is my passion,” Oshins said. “I’ve fought alongside my union brothers and sisters for workers’ rights and LGBTQ rights—it’s in my blood.” He serves on DC 37’s LAGIC Committee and is a member of Pride at Work, a constituency group of the AFL-CIO that helps to organize and fight for LGBTQI workers.

Oshins is a third generation union member. His grandfather was a tailor and shop steward in the International Ladies Garment Workers Union; his dad was a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier and a proud union member. Oshins said, “Unions advance the causes of workers and improve their lives. I am proud of this legacy.”
