Personal Service Unit

PSU is comprised of Licensed New York State Social Workers who provide confidential individual short-term counseling and support to DC 37 Health & Security actives, retirees, and their adult dependents.

PSU’s sessions are presently being conducted through teletherapy. We are here for you and your family with a wealth of resources and support.

1. How do I contact PSU?

Call the Personal Service Unit at (212) 815-1250.
Monday – Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Phone-in hours for screening/assessment (first contact): Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The screening team is staffed by three (3) Social Workers who respond to requests for assistance; we assess clients the same day they contact PSU.

2. What should I expect when I contact PSU?

The member should be prepared to give a brief description of the issues that he/she/they are experiencing. The Social Worker will ask a number of questions in order to obtain a better understanding of the situation. The Personal Service Unit may offer either short-term counseling or referrals to services in your community.

All the information gathered is confidential and will not be shared with anyone outside of PSU without your written permission to do so.

3. Why should someone use PSU?

Personal and Family Problems – This can include mental health concerns, such as depression, anxiety, bereavement, alcohol and substance abuse, and major life changes.

Occupational Stress – Work challenges can include interpersonal conflict, time and attendance issues and difficulty performing tasks. This can result in disciplinary action such as verbal or written warnings, charges, or a scheduled hearing. It is to your advantage to contact PSU at the earliest sign of workplace problems.

Group counseling – Periodically, the PSU staff provides group counseling and interventions for members with similar needs such as:

  • Stress Management Group
  • Bereavement Group
  • Effective Communication

4. How would I benefit from contacting PSU?

Counseling Services at PSU will help you to:

  • Identify your challenges and struggles
  • Develop the strengths and resources that you already have
  • Learn effective coping mechanisms to better manage stress
  • Improve your communication style
  • Function at your optimal emotional level
  • Locate community resources
