Climbing the Career Ladder with DC 37

Story by DC 37 PEPtalk

One of the major benefits provided to union workers is a path for growth based on merit and tenure. At DC 37, public and private sector members are eligible to take education courses, earn certifications, and apply for scholarships in support of advancing their careers.

“We want to help our members reach the highest levels of success,” said Stephen Johnson, Administrator of the DC 37 Education Fund.

Education benefits available to DC 37 members are made possible by different training funds that determine eligibility. There are a variety of compulsory and supplemental resources uniquely designed to meet each student’s needs.

The DC 37 Education Fund (Ed Fund) has made it possible for thousands of members to improve their academic, language, technical, and clerical skills since it was established in 1971 by former Executive Director Lillian Roberts.

Through the Ed Fund, members can prepare for civil service exams, receive financial assistance for higher education programs, and prepare for applying to new jobs.

“We advise members to get in the habit of keeping their resumes updated and always have a good elevator pitch ready,” Johnson said. “You never know when your next opportunity will find you.”

The Ed Fund recently received funding to implement the Green Jobs Program, which offers training for members to prepare for green-collar jobs that support clean energy.

“I really enjoyed my first class through the Green Jobs Program,” said Kya Woodley, Senior Police Administrative Aide and member of Local 1549. “I don’t have any experience in clean energy, but I love that there are a lot of intro-level classes to choose from. I’m excited to see more green-collar opportunities in the future.”

Members of collective bargaining units represented by DC 37 (except for Locals 371, 95, 205, 215, 253, and 389) are eligible for Ed Fund classes and programs.

Non-Profit Private Sector Education Benefits

Members who belong to one of the five locals in DC 37’s Non-Profit Private Sector Division are covered by a different training fund that provides benefits and courses in compliance with New York State care provider regulations.

DC 37 members represented by Locals 95, 205, 215, 253, and 389 are eligible for classes, test prep, workshops, and other skills upgrade opportunities at no or reduced costs.

“We want our members to be able to grow in their positions,” said Marcia Hunte, Program Coordinator of the Non-Profit and Private Sector Education Department. “Preparing members who work in early childhood education, for example, to have the tools and skills they need to become experienced educators means we have the most qualified staff caring for our children.”

The union’s non-profit and private sector members are largely responsible for providing quality, affordable care services for New York City’s youngest, eldest, houseless, and most vulnerable populations.

“I work part time and will always try to see what class I can fit into my schedule,” said Morthley Chance, teacher and member of Local 205 Day Care Employees. “As a day care provider, there are many qualifications required of me to work with children. I have been able to take those classes and more for free through my union. I encourage all of my colleagues to take advantage of this benefit.”
