Promoting and Advancing Safety and Health in Your Workplace

DC 37 wants every member to go to work and return home healthy and whole at the end of the day. The DC 37 Safety & Health Department was established to ensure that DC 37 members work in facilities free from hazards and minimize their risk of injury or illness. Our team conducts workplace inspections to ensure your employer complies with the provisions of collective bargaining agreements, applicable laws, and regulations. We are staffed with experienced and knowledgeable occupational and environmental safety and health professionals.

The DC 37 Safety & Health Department provides the following services to members covered by the Citywide contract:

  • Facilitates Labor-Management Safety and Health Committee meetings between DC 37 Locals, representatives from other unions, and City agencies.
  • Conducts worksite inspections.
  • Develops and implements workplace safety and health training programs.
  • Assists with investigations, grievances, arbitrations, and legislation involving safety and health issues, including workplace violence.
  • Interacts with State and Federal regulatory agencies such as PESH and OSHA.
  • Conducts research and workshops on occupational safety topics.

For DC 37 members who work for Cultural Institutions, please contact your Union Representative for questions about specific Workplace Safety & Health services.

Addressing Safety & Health Concerns at Your Workplace
  1. Gather as much information about the conditions and your concerns as possible:
    1. Who is affected?
    2. Which areas are impacted?
    3. When is the problem most evident?
    4. Has anyone been hurt or become ill as a result of the issue?
  2. Inform your Supervisor or Manager immediately, especially if an injury or illness occurs.
  3. After notifying management, contact your DC 37 Union Representative, who will coordinate with management to address the issue.
  4. If management does not respond to your request, contact your Union Representative for a follow-up.
  5. If an inspection or walkthrough has been requested, your Union Representative will notify the DC 37 Safety & Health Department.
  6. Allow time for the DC 37 Safety & Health team to conduct an investigation and for management to respond within a reasonable time frame.
  7. When the Safety and Health report is completed, it will be sent to your Union Representative and Local Union leadership for their follow-up.
What to Do if You Become Injured or Sick on the Job
  • Seek prompt medical attention and call 911 if necessary.
  • Notify your employer of the injury or illness.
  • Complete and maintain a copy of the employer’s incident report.
  • Notify your DC 37 Union Representative, who will contact the DC 37 Safety & Health Department.
  • Find out if your agency has a Safety and Health Committee. Per the citywide contract (Article XIV, Sec. 2d) and several unit contracts, Safety and Health Committees are required to be established in most City agencies.
  • Consider consultation with a Worker’s Compensation Attorney. Worker’s Compensation cases can be complicated and difficult to navigate.
