Statement by Queens Library Guild Local 1321 Pres. John Hyslop on the naming of Dennis Walcott as president/CEO of the Queens library.

“The members of Queens Library Guild, Local 1321, District Council 37, AFSCME, AFL-CIO are excited to collaborate with the Queens Library’s new President/CEO Dennis Walcott and continue the Queens Library staff’s excellent work. We look forward to working together and melding his extensive knowledge and experience of public service, government and education with the library staff’s extensive knowledge and experience of Queens Library’s diverse services.

We hope Mr. Walcott will develop a clear strategy that includes every library employee. Our members anticipate a transparent and inclusive strategy that fosters our library’s core mission of providing free information in all its forms to a varied audience, but also maintaining our relevance by meeting the demands of our customers. We believe Mr. Walcott will improve the work-lives of the Queens Library staff by instilling trust, compassion, empathy, kindness, a clear mission, open and honest communication, advocacy for all staff and good morale.

Our library survived a tumultuous decade of poor, corrupt leadership and low morale. Throughout the decade, the Queens Library staff has been resilient and has maintained our high quality library services under adverse conditions. We look forward to new leadership and a new day for Queens Library.”
