District Council 37, NYC’s largest public sector union, announces its June primary endorsements including Kathy Hochul for Governor
NEW YORK—District Council 37, New York City’s largest public sector union representing 150,000 workers and 50,000 retirees, announces its first round of endorsed candidates for New York State Assembly, Comptroller, Attorney General and Governor in the Democratic primary election. The union is committed to mobilizing its sizable membership on behalf of these candidates.
“Our members are dedicated essential workers on the frontlines who provide the vital services that keep New York City running 24/7,” said Henry Garrido, Executive Director District Council 37, AFSCME. “It’s critical that we elect those who share our values and are committed to providing the resources and support our members need both in the workplace and at home.”
At the top of the ticket the union is supporting Kathy Hochul for Governor, Letitia James for Attorney General, and Thomas DiNapoli for State Comptroller. “DC 37 is the backbone of New York’s municipal workforce,” said Governor Kathy Hochul. “As governor, it’s my job to fight for hardworking New Yorkers who keep our state running and who are the heart of our middle-class. I am so honored to earn this endorsement, as we continue to rebuild, moving our state forward.”
The union underwent a comprehensive screening process and ultimately chose each candidate based on their commitment to a pro-worker agenda, including fighting the economic and social injustices the pandemic has exposed. “We chose these candidates with a focus on endorsing those who prioritize the issues affecting working people and their families,” said Odetty Tineo, DC 37’s newly appointed Political and Legislative Director, “the Green Machine stands ready to organize and engage our membership in support of the candidates we’ve endorsed.”
DC 37’s list of endorsed candidates includes many incumbents who have a proven record as allies of the union, and its 150,000 members and 50,000 retirees.
