Across the country, Americans are facing an out-of-balance economy that favors the wealthy while wages remain stagnant for everyone else. Working families are struggling to get ahead and public services are under attack. Our union’s political action fund, AFSCME PEOPLE, provides us with an actionable opportunity to stand together to protect the benefits and rights we’ve won in our workplaces and our communities.
We must take an active role to elect politicians who advocate for issues that are important to working families, like the need to balance the economy, defend workers’ rights, secure workers’ benefits, invest in public services, and ensure a secure retirement for all. PEOPLE funds are used for lobbying, running grassroots campaigns, advertising our message, and directly supporting pro-worker candidates who are committed to addressing the needs of DC 37 members and retirees.
Federal law significantly restricts the ways union dues money can be used for political activities. Without AFSCME PEOPLE, we would not have the resources we need to make our voices heard in politics. What is PEOPLE?
PEOPLE is our voluntary political action fund.
Why do we need PEOPLE?
We need our own war chest to fight the attacks on our members. By law, we can’t use members’ dues money to wage our campaigns to elect candidates who stand by working families, or to oppose those who seek to deny us our rights.
What are PEOPLE contributions used for?
PEOPLE money helps us set the table to fulfill the union’s mission—protecting and strengthening working families. We use PEOPLE dollars to fight for and enforce better contracts; safeguard our pensions; elect candidates who share our values and hold them accountable at all levels—local, state and federal; lobby to pass or stop laws/legislation.
Your contributions grow, along with those of your coworkers, to create a powerful political voice and help us push back against efforts to take away benefits, retirement security and collective bargaining.
What is a PEOPLE MVP?
For as little as $8 a month, you can be a PEOPLE MVP. And when you join at the MVP level, you will receive an MVP hoodie with an embroidered PEOPLE logo.
Who can donate to PEOPLE?
In accordance with federal law, AFSCME PEOPLE accepts contributions only from AFSCME members, executive and administrative personnel, and their families.
