DC 37 states opposition to Adams administration’s budget cuts, hiring freeze

NEW YORK— District Council 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido makes the following statement in response to Mayor Eric Adams’ announcement of 15% budget cuts across City agencies and a hiring freeze despite more than 20,000 vacant positions at the City of New York:

“Budget cuts do not happen in a vacuum. Cuts to our City’s agencies equal cuts to the services that New Yorkers depend on. While the influx of asylum seekers continues to present imminent challenges to our City’s budget, we cannot pretend as though we can deliver the same level of servicing with less staff and less funding. It is times like this, when we face severe challenges, that we should invest in services to support and protect our most vulnerable, not reverse course and cut back.” – Henry Garrido, DC 37 Executive Director

District Council 37 is New York City's largest public employee union, with 150,000 members and 89,000 retirees.
