Louise Maria Stamp of New York Public Library Local 1930 has for 40 years been a literacy advocate.

Stamp was one of four women to receive the prestigious Audrey Smith Campbell Leadership Award March 10 for Women’s History Month.

As a Library Administrative Assistant in Correctional Services at the George R. Vierno Center on Riker’s Island, Stamp brings the NYPL mobile library to nearly 300 men in detention.

“When others want to break out of prisons and jails,” Stamps said, “the New York Public Library is breaking in. We provide quality library services as we treat these gentlemen with dignity and respect, and do not judge their circumstances.”

“We know when people are reading, they are at peace.” – Diane S. Williams
