Marching for Climate Justice and Jobs in Washington

DC 37 MEMBERS were out in force this spring, fighting for universal free school lunch, dogging U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan in defense of health care, rallying for improved city library services and calling for a greener world.

On April 29, hundreds of DC 37 members joined the Climate, Jobs and Justice March in Washington, D.C., to demand federal action on the growing climate crisis. Local 375 member Ricardo Hinckle and Jon Forster of the DC 37 Climate Justice Committee addressed the protesters at the event.

On May Day, union members hit the streets to call for the protection of worker and immigrant rights.

Activists lined the corner of West 118th Street and Lenox Avenue in Harlem on May 9 to denounce U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan for pushing the Republicans’ plan to repeal and replace Obamacare. Ryan was visiting a charter school.

DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido and Local 372 President Shaun D. Francois I led a union contingent to a rally at City Hall on May 15, calling for universal free school lunch for all public school students.

Union leaders and activists returned to City Hall on May 19 to call upon city lawmakers to add $24 million for operating expenses and $300 million for capital projects in next year’s budget for public libraries.
