Metropolitan and Queens hospitals earn national A grade

By DIANE S. WILLIAMS

Two Health+Hospitals facilities earned national recognition thanks to the hard work and dedication of Local 420 members on the frontlines keeping public hospitals clean and safe.

Metropolitan Hospital on Manhattan’s Eastside and Queens Hospital Center, the only hospital in that borough to receive an “A” grade, earned the top Leapfrog Hospital Safety standard for spring 2022. The “A” grade merits national distinction and recognizes the two public hospitals for achieving the highest standards in protecting patients from preventable harm and error.

The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization committed to quality, safety, and transparency in the U.S. health care system. Twice a year, Leapfrog surveys more than 6,000 general hospitals nationwide and issues grades “A” to “F” based on 30-plus performance measures of errors, accidents, injuries, and infections.

“This national distinction lifts up our members who work tirelessly to keep patients safe,” said Carmen Charles, President of NYC Municipal Hospitals Employees Local 420. “Too often, they go without the recognition and commendation they deserve, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. I applaud these Local 420 members, and their union sisters and brothers who work 24/7 to provide the very best in patient care, safety, and cleanliness at all New York City Health and Hospital facilities.”
